Welcome
Because of the ROP/STC Internship Class hosted by the Marin County Office of Education, I have created this blog to let others know of the many things I have learned from my summer internship at the Marin Abuse Women's Services, in San Rafael, CA. Bilingual Speaker ≈ Enjoy meeting new people and contributing help ≈ I have had life experiences to make me stronger and a more helpful human being. I enjoy listening to others problems and trying to in one way or another make it better for them. During this past year i have been involved in a lot of organizations that i have volunteered at and participated in, and from all those experiences i have learned a lot about the type of person i am, and the type pf work i would like to do in the future. I love learning new things through my own life experiences and with that knowledge helping others that are in need of help.
Internship Description
In this job I worked in the Development department with Jill Madison who is the manager of Development Public Relations and also with Courtney Kent, the assistant of Development Public Relations as well. I helped them with all their projects but mostly the project of ending domestic violence in 5 years in Marin. I was given my own work area and this really was something that made me feel like I was a part of their staff, and which made me more responsible and confident.
I did overall a lot of re search, data entry, fund raising and help with the task of the 5 Year Plan program.

Organization Overview
MAWS isn’t just a place for women , it also has programs for men that offers classes that teach males the process of becoming non-violent.
When there is a case MAWS usually takes the time to provide immediate safety for the women through programs, educate the community about the social and political roots of violence that is used as a tool of oppression and control of women, and one of the other ways that MAWS helps is by making it possible for the community to create innovative and dynamic solutions to end violence. Its a program that will do anything in its hands to make the community a safer place for women or man to live and grow up in.
Organization Structure and Culture
In the MAWS office there are also other organizations that work in the same office, for example the YMCA and Habitat Media. MAWS is the organization that owns this building but on the second floor it is shared by 4 other organizations that also do their best to make Marin a better place. The building is a currently new building and is not completely finished but it’s structured in a very unique way so it can be a private and confidential place for families to feel comfortable at.

This career includes assisting psychology, rehabilitation, or social work, to provide client services, and also being able to support families in need. May assist social workers with developing, organizing, and conducting programs to prevent and resolve problems relevant to substance abuse, human relationships, rehabilitation, or adult daycare. Exclude "Rehabilitation Counselors", "Personal and Home Care Aides", "Eligibility Interviewers, Government Programs", and "Psychiatric Technicians".

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A Social and Human Service Assistant has a lot of skills, knowledge and abilities that are needed to really help them do their job the best they can.
The most important knowledge that is needed to be a Social and Human Service Assistants is to know about Customer and Personal Service, English Language, Psychology, Therapy, Counseling, Education and Training.
There are also skills that are needed; some of them are, being an active listener, being able to speak to others and conveying information effectively, having the ability to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Social Perceptiveness is also another kill needed that includes being aware of others reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
The abilities a person should most likely have are Oral Comprehension, Oral Expression, Speech Clarity, Speech Recognition, and Problem Sensitivity.
Occupation Specific Tasks:
- Advise clients regarding food stamps, child care, food, money management, sanitation, or housekeeping.
- Assist clients with preparation of forms, such as tax or rent forms.
- Assist in locating housing for displaced individuals.
- Assist in planning of food budget, using charts and sample budgets.
- Care for children in client's home during client's appointments.
- Consult with supervisor concerning programs for individual families.
- Demonstrate use and care of equipment for tenant use.
- Explain rules established by owner or management, such as sanitation and maintenance requirements, and parking regulations.
- Inform tenants of facilities, such as laundries and playgrounds.
- Interview individuals and family members to compile information on social, educational, criminal, institutional, or drug history.
- Keep records and prepare reports for owner or management concerning visits with clients.
- Meet with youth groups to acquaint them with consequences of delinquent acts.
- Monitor free, supplementary meal program to ensure cleanliness of facility and that eligibility guidelines are met for persons receiving meals.
- Observe and discuss meal preparation and suggest alternate methods of food preparation.
- Observe clients' food selections and recommend alternate economical and nutritional food choices.
- Oversee day-to-day group activities of residents in institution.
- Provide information and refer individuals to public or private agencies or community services for assistance.
- Submit reports and review reports or problems with superior.
- Transport and accompany clients to shopping areas or to appointments, using automobile.
- Visit individuals in homes or attend group meetings to provide information on agency services, requirements and procedures.

How My Internship Fits/Does Not Fit My Future
This intern experience fits my future because I would like to master in psychology or business and both of these careers are somehow included in the MAWS organization. Most of the employees at MAWS have goten a masters in Business and that is my second choice career that i would like to major in the future.
I cant completely say that this intern was exacly everything i wanted it to be because it didnt have as much experience with psychology and the way the process of helping familys with their problems worked, but i do understand that, that will be really hard to experience because that is something very confidential. I did enjoy learninig more about a non profit organization and how it runs. I think that this is the closest i will get to learning and being part of an organization that tries to make a difference in poeples lives and i am very thankful for this experience. This was something i will never forget and i know it was worth the time because noe i feel like i am ready to face a real work that includes the job that i am interested in.
It has granted me a learning experience that has made me more aware of career choices for the future.
